A hotel guest in Nanjing, China, has donated his refunded room charges to charity after a marble bathroom wall collapsed into the bathtub while he was taking a bath.
The guest, identified only as Mr Wang from Hunan, said he travelled to Nanjing to attend a concert and checked into the hotel on July 25 for a two-night stay, paying 684 yuan (about RM410) per night.
He said the incident happened in the early hours of July 27 while he was soaking in the bathtub.
According to Mr Wang, he briefly sat on the edge of the bathtub with his feet still in the water as he reached for an item. Moments later, he heard an unusual sound and noticed the marble wall beside the tub beginning to loosen.
“The wall tiles suddenly started falling. I was thrown backwards out of the bathtub and landed on the floor,” he said.
Mr Wang said he landed on his back and experienced some discomfort but did not suffer any serious injuries.
A video recorded at the scene showed multiple marble tiles that had fallen into the bathtub, with several of them shattering on impact.
Hotel staff arrived shortly after the incident and advised him to seek medical attention. However, Mr Wang declined, saying his injuries were minor and that he only needed to rest. The hotel later transferred him to another room and provided him with a complimentary fruit platter.
When checking out later that morning, Mr Wang said he did not want financial compensation and only requested a written apology from the hotel.
The hotel subsequently refunded more than 1,300 yuan (about RM780) in accommodation charges and issued a formal apology bearing its official company seal.
In the letter, the hotel said the incident did not result in personal injury or property damage but acknowledged the distress and inconvenience caused. It added that the affected room had been closed for repairs and that inspections would be carried out on the bathroom walls of all guest rooms to prevent similar incidents.
Although Mr Wang repeatedly told the hotel he did not wish to keep the refunded money because he had already stayed at the property, the hotel insisted he accept it.
After several rounds of discussions, he decided to donate the entire refund to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation.
“I don’t need the money, so I thought I’d use it to do something good,” he said.
