A dramatic crash in Brisbane, Australia, left a car embedded in the side of a bus after the vehicle reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid another car.
The collision occurred at about 6.30pm on Wednesday at the intersection of Beaudesert Road and Granard Road in Rocklea, in Brisbane’s southern suburbs.
Dramatic footage captured the blue Toyota Yaris speeding across the intersection before crashing into the side of a Brisbane City Council bus with such force that the car became lodged inside the vehicle.
Images from the scene showed the Yaris partially suspended in the air, with its rear wheels hanging around two metres above the road after penetrating the side of the bus.
According to police, the crash happened after a black SsangYong attempted to merge from the centre lane before making a turn near the intersection. The Yaris allegedly swerved to avoid the vehicle, lost control and slammed into the bus.
A witness, Evan Boulton, who was travelling in a nearby car, described the impact as sounding “like an explosion”.
The bus was returning to its depot at the time and was not carrying any passengers, a factor authorities said likely prevented a far more serious tragedy.
Retired police superintendent Peter Flanders described the incident as “the escape of the century”, saying it was remarkable that nobody was killed.
The 45-year-old female driver of the Toyota Yaris was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in stable condition, suffering chest pain and shock.
Meanwhile, the 66-year-old bus driver escaped without serious injuries.
Police later issued the 66-year-old driver of the SsangYong with a A$690 (approximately RM2,000) traffic infringement notice and three demerit points for driving without due care and attention.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
