Police have opened an investigation into the death of a dog during an operation to catch stray animals at Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Port Klang, three days ago.
The investigation was launched after authorities suspected elements of animal cruelty were involved in the incident.
Klang Selatan District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Lim Jit Huey said the dog was confirmed dead during the incident, which occurred at about 10.50pm on July 29 in front of a house at the location.
“The carcass has been sent to the Selangor Veterinary Department headquarters for a post-mortem examination,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
He said the operation was carried out by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) with cooperation from local residents following complaints related to stray dogs in the area.
Lim also confirmed that police were investigating a video circulating on social media, which showed a group of men tying and pulling a dog while a woman was heard pleading for the animal to be released.
The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code.
Police also advised the public not to continue sharing the video on social media as it could cause unnecessary concern and unease among the community.
Meanwhile, MBDK previously stated that it would leave the matter fully to police for a thorough investigation into the incident.
The council said the operation took place between 8.30pm and midnight following official complaints from residents regarding safety concerns linked to the increasing number of stray dogs.
The enforcement action was conducted under the MPK 2007 Dog Licensing and Dog Breeding Premises By-Law 17(1), with support from the Committee on Health, Community and Sustainable Development (JKKPM) and notification to local councillors.
