The discovery of Malayan tiger cubs and juveniles in Malaysia’s first dedicated tiger reserve has offered new hope for the survival of the critically endangered species, although conservationists warn that poaching and declining prey numbers remain major challenges.
Camera trap monitoring at the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve (ASARTR) in Ulu Tembeling captured evidence of tiger breeding within the protected area, marking an important milestone in efforts to safeguard the nation’s remaining tiger population. The findings suggest the reserve has suitable conditions for the species to survive and reproduce.
However, conservation groups stressed that the positive development does not mean the threats facing Malayan tigers have been eliminated. The Habitat Foundation programme director Dr Ahmad Zafir Abdul Wahab said illegal hunting and a shortage of natural prey continued to pose the biggest risks to the species.
He said Panthera Malaysia and the Pahang State Parks Corporation (PTNP) have continued deploying rangers for forest patrols and enforcement operations to prevent poaching activities. Scientific monitoring through camera traps has also helped researchers establish a baseline to track tiger numbers and evaluate conservation efforts.
Efforts are also being carried out to restore prey populations, including increasing the availability of key food sources such as sambar deer and barking deer. Conservationists believe a healthier prey population would encourage tigers to remain within protected areas instead of moving into riskier locations in search of food.
Gazetted on Aug 31, 2023, ASARTR was established by the Pahang government through PTNP to strengthen protection for Malayan tigers and their natural habitat. The reserve covers 134,183 hectares across two phases and forms part of a wider protected landscape connected to Taman Negara, extending over 568,500 hectares.
Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah officially declared the reserve in July 2023 as part of efforts to enhance wildlife conservation in the state. The initiative also supports wider protection of other threatened species, including the seladang, Malayan tapir and Asian elephant.
PTNP chief executive officer Zainal Abidin Othman said monitoring results showed the tiger population in ASARTR remained stable and matched the forest’s capacity to support wildlife. He added that the reserve was created to expand tiger habitats while protecting the wider ecosystem.
The reserve is managed through a partnership involving PTNP, the Pahang Forestry Department and Enggang Management Services (EMS), with support from conservation organisations such as Bringing Back Our Rare Animals (Bora), Nature Based Solutions Malaysia, The Habitat Foundation and Panthera Malaysia.
Panthera Malaysia country director Wai Yee Lam said surveys conducted since 2023 had recorded encouraging signs, including sightings of tiger cubs and juveniles. She said camera traps and ranger patrols played a crucial role in understanding tiger movements, habitat use and population trends.
Community involvement has also become a key part of conservation work, with Orang Asli villagers trained as community rangers to help patrol the reserve, detect illegal activities and protect wildlife. Conservationists said their traditional knowledge of the forest provides valuable support in preserving the ecosystem.
Beyond protecting tigers, ASARTR also serves as a refuge for other endangered wildlife while maintaining the balance of forest ecosystems. As an apex predator, the Malayan tiger plays an important role in controlling prey populations and ensuring healthier forests.
EMS Decision Support Services lead William Yap said around 90 personnel were stationed in Jerantut to support conservation operations in and around the reserve, including about 65 frontline patrollers working to protect the area.
