A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck 38 kilometres north of Suez, Egypt, shortly after 3am local time (0000 GMT) on Monday, according to Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.
The institute said there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage following the tremor.
The Egyptian Red Crescent activated its emergency response plan in the governorates where the earthquake was felt.
Residents were advised to stay away from buildings showing signs of structural damage and to follow official updates while authorities continue assessing the situation.
Meanwhile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the earthquake at a slightly lower magnitude of 5.4, estimating that it struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.
