Two Form Five students were killed after the motorcycle they were riding allegedly struck the rear of a car before they were thrown into the opposite lane and hit by a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in a crash along Kilometre 119 of the Kuala Lumpur–Kuantan Road near Temerloh on Monday night.
The accident, which occurred at about 8.20pm, claimed the lives of Muhammad Nazim Dzafran Mohd Faizul and Muhammad Hafizuddin Abdullah, both aged 17, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
Temerloh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasyim Bahron said preliminary investigations found that the victims, who were Form Five students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Chenor, were travelling from Temerloh towards Chenor in Maran when the crash happened.
He said the Yamaha LC135 motorcycle they were riding was believed to have attempted to overtake a Toyota Vios before colliding with the rear right side of the vehicle.
“The impact caused both the rider and pillion passenger to be thrown into the opposite lane.
“At the same time, a Perodua Alza travelling from the opposite direction towards Temerloh was unable to avoid them and struck both victims,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Mohd Nasyim said initial investigations indicated that the crash was believed to have been caused by the motorcycle rider’s failure to maintain control of the vehicle.
The 34-year-old Toyota Vios driver and the 43-year-old Perodua Alza driver were not injured in the incident.
The bodies of both victims were taken to the Temerloh Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem examinations.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
