An elderly woman endured more than two hours of fear after she was tied up, gagged and threatened with a knife by two men who broke into her home in Taman Desa here in the early hours of yesterday.
The 77-year-old victim, who lives alone, escaped physical injuries but lost about RM20,000 in cash during the robbery.
The victim’s nephew, who wished to be known as Lee, 58, said the two suspects armed with knives entered her bedroom upstairs before confronting her.
He said the suspects then restrained the woman by tying her hands with black adhesive tape and covering her mouth to prevent her from calling for help.
“One of the suspects pointed a knife at my aunt and threatened her not to resist or make any noise.
“Out of fear, she managed to escape into the bathroom and locked the door, but the suspects kicked it open, dragged her out and tied her legs,” he said when contacted today.
Lee said the suspects later forced the victim, who works as a temple caretaker, to reveal the location of valuables before searching through the entire house.
He added that both suspects wore full face coverings, showing only their eyes. However, the victim suspected they were of Indian descent after hearing them speak Tamil during a phone conversation.
After the suspects fled, the victim contacted Lee at about 1.45am, and he rushed to the house before bringing her to a nearby police station to lodge a report.
Lee said the robbers also damaged the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the house.
He added that the victim’s child works overseas, while the houses on both sides of her home were vacant, with one undergoing renovation, causing neighbours not to notice the incident.
Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook confirmed receiving a report regarding the robbery.
He said police are conducting investigations, including reviewing CCTV footage, to identify and track down the suspects.
The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and Section 397 of the same Act for armed robbery.
