Police have confirmed that the three Malaysians arrested in Thailand with 87 kilograms of methamphetamine are all from Sarawak.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) Director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said investigations found that the three men were travelling by train from Bangkok to Narathiwat when they were intercepted by Thai authorities.
He said the suspects were arrested at Hat Yai Railway Station after officers discovered a large quantity of methamphetamine concealed in their luggage and backpacks.
“The Thai Police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) have shared preliminary information on the arrests with us.
“We have excellent cooperation with the Thai authorities, and as usual, we will allow them to carry out their investigations in accordance with their laws,” Hussein told Bernama after appearing on Bernama Radio’s Waspada programme on Wednesday.
Earlier reports stated that the 87kg of crystal meth, commonly known as syabu, is estimated to be worth RM4.3 million.
The drugs were seized during a joint operation involving Hat Yai Police, the Railway Police, the Tourist Police, and Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board Region 9.
Preliminary investigations by Thai authorities indicate that the drugs were intended for delivery to a drug trafficking syndicate in Malaysia.
The three suspects are believed to have been promised RM8,000 each to smuggle the drugs to their intended destination.
