Thailand has been shaken by another shooting incident after an armed man opened fire at a local government office on the outskirts of the capital on Monday.
The latest incident came just days after a deadly shooting at a school in the same province, once again putting Thailand’s gun control measures under the spotlight.
Provincial police chief Major General Dejrapee Kongdee said the suspect, who is a former parliamentarian, allegedly fired at a senior official and the official’s driver before he was arrested.
“Two injured individuals were taken to hospital for treatment,” he said.
The latest shooting comes after a separate incident on Friday in which nine people were killed and more than 20 others injured. A 14-year-old boy was alleged to have shot and killed his grandparents before carrying out an attack at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district.
The school shooting was described as Thailand’s deadliest mass shooting in almost four years, sparking renewed concerns over access to firearms and security measures.
Following the tragedy, students at the school returned to classes as usual on Monday. Some students were subjected to metal detector checks and other security screening measures as authorities tightened security on the school premises.
The back-to-back incidents have further fuelled public discussion over firearm ownership and safety measures in Thailand, particularly around schools and government facilities.
