A Malaysian woman was left stunned after a loyalty test she arranged for her husband allegedly ended with him telling a “stranger” that he had divorced his wife just a month earlier.
The unusual incident was shared by Threads user @test_box__, who said she had recently started offering a service for people who wanted to find out whether their partners would entertain advances from someone else online.
Her first reported client was a married woman who said she and her husband had been frequently arguing. As her husband was posted in Kuala Lumpur at the time, she admitted becoming increasingly worried that he might be communicating with other women behind her back.
The wife then approached the Threads user and asked her to test her husband, even offering to pay if he responded to the messages.
Screenshots shared online showed the tester approaching the man and asking whether they could get to know each other. After exchanging a few messages, she asked whether he was already in a relationship.
The husband allegedly replied that he had “just divorced last month”.
The response reportedly left his wife shocked, as she maintained that the couple were still married. She subsequently asked the tester whether her husband’s statement could potentially amount to a talak, or divorce pronouncement.
The thread attracted widespread attention, reportedly receiving more than 624,000 views at the time the screenshots were taken. Some users questioned why a married man would tell another woman that he was divorced, while others warned that loyalty tests could potentially trigger much more serious consequences within a relationship.
However, whether the husband’s statement actually resulted in a valid divorce cannot be determined simply through social media discussion.
According to guidance from the Selangor Mufti Department, statements by a husband claiming that he is single, unmarried, has no wife or has separated from his wife may potentially fall under lafaz kinayah, referring to an indirect expression of divorce. Whether such wording results in a divorce can depend on the husband’s intention when the statement was made.
Malaysia’s government portal also states that a divorce pronouncement made outside court must be reported and subsequently confirmed by the Syariah Court. The Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia likewise states that divorce pronouncements should be made before the court and with its permission.
The incident has since sparked discussion online not only about relationship trust, but also about the potential consequences of casually making statements about divorce, particularly when such statements may carry legal and religious implications.
