A Malaysian wedding guest has found herself at the centre of an online backlash after publicly questioning the simple door gift she received at a friend’s wedding.
In a Threads post, user @adira_azmat shared a photo of a pink paper bag containing what appeared to be packaged bread and a drink, prompting a debate over whether wedding guests should expect more from the gifts they receive.
The woman claimed the wedding was held at a hotel and appeared surprised that the door gift consisted of such modest items.
“Went to my friend’s wedding. The ceremony was held at a hotel, but is this really the door gift? Bread and a drink?” she wrote.
She also suggested that the couple could have prepared something “a little more grand”, while comparing the gift to what might typically be given at a less affluent wedding.
The post quickly attracted attention online, reportedly surpassing 824,000 views at the time of the screenshot.
However, many commenters disagreed with her reaction and accused her of being ungrateful, arguing that a door gift is simply a token of appreciation from the hosts rather than an indication of their financial status.
One user pointed out that guests had already been invited to attend the wedding and enjoy a meal at the hotel, while the door gift was an additional gesture from the newlyweds.
“A door gift is a gesture, not a measure of the couple’s wealth,” the commenter said, adding that guests could always purchase something themselves if they wanted a particular item.
Another user stressed that being invited to a wedding did not entitle guests to expensive wedding favours, saying the hosts were under no obligation to provide lavish gifts.
The comparison to a “poor person’s wedding” also drew criticism, with some netizens saying guests should not judge a couple based on the value of their wedding gifts or attempt to calculate how much had been spent on the celebration.
