A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Flores region in Indonesia early Saturday, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
The earthquake was recorded 36 kilometres northeast of Mbay in East Nusa Tenggara, with the epicentre located at a depth of 15 kilometres, BMKG said.
Following the strong tremor, the agency issued a tsunami warning as authorities remained alert to possible risks in affected coastal areas.
Strong shaking was reportedly felt in several locations, prompting residents to rush out of their homes and onto the streets in search of safer areas.
The sudden earthquake caused panic among residents, with local reports describing people evacuating as a precaution amid concerns over further tremors and the tsunami threat.
The incident also triggered heightened attention from local authorities as communities assessed the situation and monitored developments following the powerful quake.
As of the latest reports, there have been no confirmed casualties linked to the earthquake.
