A man in his 60s died after he was believed to have suffered an electric shock at Taman Kinabutan Ria, Tawau, on Friday evening.
The victim was found lying face down on the ground and unconscious when emergency responders arrived at the scene at about 6pm.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin said the department received an emergency call at 6.09pm before seven firefighters were dispatched to the location, about 10 kilometres from the station.
He said firefighters requested assistance from Sabah Electricity to cut off the power supply before approaching and retrieving the victim.
“According to the report received, a victim was found lying on the ground in an unconscious condition. After the electricity supply was disconnected, firefighters retrieved the victim, who was later pronounced dead by medical personnel,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
The victim’s body was subsequently handed over to police for further action.
The incident also highlights the need for caution around electrical installations, particularly where exposed or damaged wiring could pose a serious safety risk.
Jemishin said the operation was concluded at 7.42pm after firefighters ensured there were no further hazards at the location.
