A worker died after falling into a tank containing chemical waste at an industrial premises along Jalan Keluli 3, Pasir Gudang Industrial Area, last night.
The 26-year-old man reportedly fell into a 15,000-cubic-metre metal hydroxide sludge tank at around 9.51pm.
Operations Commander Deputy Superintendent Bimba II Firdaus Ahmad said the fire and rescue department received an emergency call at 9.51pm before a fire engine carrying seven personnel from the Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.
He said the team arrived about four minutes later and found the victim inside the tank at a depth of approximately 1.5 metres.
“The victim was inside a tank measuring about 20 feet in height and showed no signs of life.
“The firefighters then carried out an operation to remove him using specialised equipment, including rescue ropes and a stretcher,” he said in a statement today.
Firdaus said the victim was successfully brought to the surface before being pronounced dead by a medical officer from the Health Ministry.
“The victim’s body was subsequently handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
The rescue and recovery operation was fully completed at around 11.03pm.
The case has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
