A total of 27 security guards at Likas Hospital have lodged a complaint with the Sabah Labour Department (JTK) over alleged issues involving rest breaks, overtime payments and staff welfare.
Their representative, Shamri Matnoor, said the formal complaint was filed against their security company employer on August 11, following unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter through negotiations.
According to Shamri, the guards are entitled to a three-hour break during each 12-hour shift under their employment contracts. However, they alleged that they were still required to perform their duties during their designated break periods.
The guards also raised concerns about difficulties attending Friday prayers, claiming there were insufficient relief guards available to take over their posts while they were away.
Shamri said the group was prepared to provide supporting documents to the Labour Department, including employment contracts, shift schedules and duty rosters, to assist with the investigation.
He also urged the authorities to conduct an audit into claims involving attendance records and payment-related matters.
The guards are seeking appropriate action against any parties found responsible, stressing that their wages are important for supporting their families and covering everyday expenses.
“Where is the rule that allows working overtime without pay? What about our welfare when we need to settle payments and meet the living costs of our wives and children?” Shamri asked.
He called on the hospital’s management to address the concerns raised by the security guards and urged the relevant authorities to investigate the matter and take swift action where necessary.
