Selangor will observe September 1 as a special state holiday next Tuesday following the state’s overall victory at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the declaration was made as a gesture of appreciation to the state’s athletes, officials, volunteers and parents who contributed to the success throughout the sporting event.
“I am pleased to announce that the Selangor state government has declared September 1, 2026, next Tuesday, as a special SUKMA 2026 holiday,” he said during the closing ceremony of SUKMA Selangor 2026 at Aneka Walk here on Monday.
Selangor emerged as the overall champion after topping the medal tally with 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, bringing its total haul to 245 medals.
The achievement saw the Selangor contingent, known as the Gergasi Merah, surpass its initial target of 80 gold medals set before the Games began.
It also marked Selangor’s return to the top of the country’s biggest multi-sport event after its previous overall victory at SUKMA Sarawak 2016, where the state secured 59 gold, 73 silver and 63 bronze medals.
SUKMA 2026, which officially ran from August 15 until Monday, featured 37 sports and 368 events across nine districts in Selangor.
Amirudin, however, reminded those working in Putrajaya that they should continue reporting for duty as usual despite the state holiday declaration.
He also urged Selangor athletes to continue strengthening their efforts and pursuing their ambitions to bring pride to both the state and Malaysia.
“Continue your journey and strengthen your efforts to achieve your dreams.
“On behalf of the state, I believe you have the opportunity to represent our beloved Malaysia because all of you are the hopes of the future,” he said.
Amirudin also expressed his appreciation for the attendance of Selangor Crown Prince Tengku Amir Shah, describing his presence as an important moment in history for Selangor residents and athletes nationwide.
He subsequently called on everyone to pray that the success and excellence achieved by Selangor athletes would continue in the years ahead.
