A weak earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale was detected in the waters off Batu Pahat, Johor, at 4.12pm on Tuesday.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake was recorded at coordinates 1.7°N and 102.8°E, with a depth of 10 kilometres.
According to a statement posted on MetMalaysia’s Facebook page, the epicentre was located about 104 kilometres northwest of Tanjung Balai-Meral, Indonesia, and approximately 18 kilometres southwest of Batu Pahat.
The department said the tremor was classified as a weak earthquake and posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
“Based on the latest assessment, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” MetMalaysia said in its post on Tuesday.
Residents in the affected area were nevertheless advised to remain alert and refer to official updates from the authorities for the latest information on seismic activity.
