Country music icon Dolly Parton, whose distinctive voice, songwriting talent and unmistakable image made her one of the world’s most recognisable entertainers, has died aged 80, her family announced on Tuesday.
Parton died peacefully in Nashville, according to her publicist. Her family did not disclose a cause of death, although People magazine reported that she had been fighting a brief battle with cancer. Days before her death, Parton had told the publication that she was dealing with unspecified health problems but intended to continue working.
Her journey into music began when she was just a young child growing up in Tennessee. At around six years old, she wrote her first song, “Little Tiny Tasseltop”, about a corncob doll made with corn-silk hair. Her mother kept the song safely stored in a shoebox, preserving an early glimpse of the talent that would later make Parton a global star.
Born on Jan 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton was raised in a large family in a modest one-room cabin. Her mother, Avie Lee, frequently sang traditional songs from England, Ireland and Wales, helping inspire Parton’s early love of music and storytelling.
By the age of eight, Parton had received her first proper guitar and was already writing songs. She appeared on local radio at 11 and performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville when she was just 13. After finishing school, she moved to Nashville to pursue music professionally.
Her breakthrough included a celebrated partnership with country singer Porter Wagoner, with whom she performed on television and recorded 14 top-10 duets. She later wrote “I Will Always Love You” as a farewell to Wagoner when she decided to establish herself as a solo performer.
That song would eventually become one of her most famous works after being recorded by Whitney Houston. Other Parton classics, including “Jolene” and “Coat Of Many Colors”, cemented her reputation as one of country music’s most gifted songwriters.
Parton is estimated to have written around 3,000 songs throughout her career, although she recorded only about 450 of them. Her work was frequently praised for its vivid storytelling, emotional depth and ability to turn personal experiences into songs that connected with audiences around the world.
Her influence extended far beyond music. Parton became an actress, television personality and businesswoman, appearing in films including “9 To 5”, “Steel Magnolias”, “The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas” and “Straight Talk”. She also established Dollywood, a major theme park in her home state of Tennessee.
Despite her enormous success, Parton remained closely associated with her humble beginnings. Her colourful appearance, towering blonde hairstyles and flamboyant outfits became part of her trademark public image, while her humour and warmth helped her appeal to audiences across political and cultural divides.
Her philanthropic work also became a major part of her legacy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Parton donated $1 million to vaccine research at Vanderbilt University, while her literacy programme reached children in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia and Ireland. She also supported scholarships for students in the Tennessee county where she was born.
Parton collected 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and had 25 songs reach No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and later entered the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Her music continued to influence generations of performers, with artists ranging from Beyoncé and The White Stripes to her goddaughter Miley Cyrus putting their own interpretations on her songs.
For Parton, however, the greatest achievement was always the music itself. She once described songwriting as the moment when she felt closest to God, viewing the songs she created as something more lasting than the awards and fame that followed.
After nearly six decades in the spotlight, Parton leaves behind a vast catalogue of music, films, businesses and charitable work — but it is her songs and storytelling that are likely to remain the most enduring part of her legacy.
