‘Should I Laugh Or Cry?’ M’sian Woman Loses RM2k Savings After Termites Feast On Cash

Date:

A Malaysian woman was left devastated after discovering that about RM2,000 of her hard-earned savings had been badly damaged by termites.

The woman shared her unfortunate experience on Threads, posting photographs showing several RM20 banknotes that had been chewed through by the insects.

Some of the notes had their edges and corners eaten away, while others were riddled with holes, leaving much of the cash severely damaged.

According to her post, she had kept the savings underneath a cupboard before discovering the termite damage. Faced with the sight of her money being destroyed, she joked that she could not decide whether to laugh or be angry and turned to netizens for advice.

The incident quickly attracted reactions online, with several users suggesting that she bring the damaged notes to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) as soon as possible to enquire about replacing them.

Some commenters also pointed out that the serial numbers on the affected banknotes should remain visible, as this could be important when applying for a replacement.

While the incident was certainly frustrating, netizens also found humour in the situation. One user jokingly remarked that the termites appeared to have upgraded their diet, moving from rotten wood to cash.

The episode serves as an unusual reminder that keeping large amounts of cash in vulnerable places can come with unexpected risks, particularly in areas prone to termite infestations.

For the woman, however, the immediate concern is whether her damaged savings can still be recovered or replaced after the insects helped themselves to her money.
