A man who previously went viral after allegedly attempting to flee from a police inspection in Meru was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here today for obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties.
Shahrudin Saad, 45, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Siti Zubaidah Mamat, who ordered him to serve two months in jail if he failed to pay the fine. Shahrudin settled the fine.
The unemployed father of seven was accused of intentionally obstructing Corporal Mohd Fareth Abdul Hadi while the police officer was performing his duties at about 6.10pm on 24 August along Jalan Persiaran Hamzah Alang towards Pekan Meru.
He was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both upon conviction.
During mitigation, lawyer K. Nathiya urged the court to impose the minimum fine, highlighting that her client was unemployed and had seven children, five of whom are still attending school.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Salman Alfarisi Nawawi appeared for the prosecution.
According to the facts of the case, the complainant and another police officer were conducting patrol duties within the Meru police station’s jurisdiction when they spotted a black Toyota Vellfire being driven suspiciously.
The complainant then instructed the driver to stop by activating the patrol car’s beacon lights and siren. Instead, the driver allegedly attempted to escape and drove aggressively along Jalan Persiaran Hamzah Alang towards Pekan Meru.
During the pursuit, the Toyota Vellfire allegedly collided with the front left bumper of the police patrol car before the driver was eventually stopped.
A body search of Shahrudin found no prohibited items. However, a check through the police system revealed that he had one outstanding wanted record.
The court’s decision brings the case to a close after the incident attracted attention online following footage and reports of the man’s alleged attempt to evade the police check.
