The Penang government is seeking ways to assist the families of two Penang-born climbers who were reported missing while trekking in Nepal’s Langtang Valley.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state administration would first gather the necessary information before contacting the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department to determine the assistance that could be provided.
The two missing climbers were identified as engineers Muhammad Muhaimin Azhad Noor Hadi, 27, from Gelugor, and Muhammad Zaki Othman, 29, from Kubang Semang, Bukit Mertajam.
Both men are employed at the ICU office in Jawi.
Chow said this when met after the Penang-level National Day 2026 celebrations at Padang Kota Lama today.
The state government’s move comes as families and friends continue to await news on the whereabouts and safety of the Malaysians reported missing in Nepal.
Meanwhile, around 25,000 people began gathering at Padang Kota Lama from as early as 7.30am to witness the Penang-level National Day parade.
The celebration featured 125 contingents involving 9,152 participants from various state and federal government departments, agencies, statutory bodies, corporate subsidiaries and non-governmental organisations.
Although hazy conditions affected parts of George Town, with several locations recording moderate Air Pollutant Index readings, the crowd remained at the venue until the celebrations ended at around noon.
