A woman in her 20s was injured after being struck by falling fragments from a concrete structure at a heritage building along Lebuh China here on Tuesday night.
The incident happened at around 11.30pm after a cable attached to a wall reportedly came loose, causing part of the structure at the corner of the building to collapse.
Fragments from the structure then fell onto the woman, leaving her injured.
She was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance for medical treatment, according to Berita Harian.
Following the incident, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) removed the fallen debris and cordoned off the affected area to prevent members of the public from entering.
The incident comes just weeks after two foreign tourists were injured by falling debris from another heritage building along Armenian Street.
In that case, the structural failure was believed to have been caused by termite damage to a wooden beam within the building.
Following the latest incidents, the Penang government has instructed George Town World Heritage Incorporated and MBPP to issue safety advisories to owners of heritage properties.
Owners have been urged to conduct safety inspections of their buildings to identify potential structural risks and prevent similar incidents from occurring.
