A parked SUV that had remained stationary at a traffic light for an extended period suddenly lurched forward today, crashing into a motorcycle after members of the public approached the vehicle to check on its driver.
The incident happened at around noon near the Samarahan Heart Centre. The motorcyclist had noticed that the SUV had remained motionless for some time and became concerned that the driver might be unwell.
The rider stopped his motorcycle in front of the SUV before joining other members of the public in approaching the vehicle and knocking on its window to check on the driver.
According to the rider, they were worried that the driver might have suffered a heart-related problem or another medical issue that had left him unable to control the vehicle. However, the driver did not immediately open the door.
Moments later, the SUV suddenly moved forward and slammed into the motorcycle, sending it underneath the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Patrol officers arrived after receiving a report and also knocked on the SUV’s window. The Chinese driver eventually opened the door, while his family later arrived and took him away from the scene.
Police have since begun investigating the cause of the incident.
The incident also serves as a reminder for members of the public to maintain a safe distance when approaching a vehicle that has remained unusually stationary on the road, particularly if there is a possibility that the driver could suddenly start moving.
