A 58-year-old German tourist died after falling into a hole believed to be part of an old water drainage route while hiking with his wife at Jungle Trail 10 in Cameron Highlands on Friday.
The victim, Hasselbusch Jorg, 58, died in the incident, while his 57-year-old wife survived.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said the department received an emergency call at 12.04pm about an alleged landslide at the location.
“Initial reports found that there was no landslide at the scene. Instead, the victim is believed to have slipped into a hole from an old water drainage route while hiking with his wife.
“An initial examination found that the man was unconscious,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Following the incident, a team from the Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station was deployed to evacuate the victim from the area.
Zulfadli said the fire engine arrived at the foot of the hill at 12.35pm, after which personnel continued on foot for about seven kilometres to reach the site.
“The team arrived at the location at 1.20pm before carrying the victim down to the foot of the mountain using a stretcher.
“The victim was subsequently handed over to Health Ministry personnel and was pronounced dead,” he said.
The operation was also assisted by seven police officers, five Forestry Department personnel, four Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel and two Health Ministry personnel.
