Police fired a shot at the tyre of a Perodua Myvi after its occupants allegedly rammed a motorcycle belonging to the police’s Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) and attempted to hit officers in Bandar Putra, Kulai, early on Saturday.
The incident occurred at about 1.20am when URB personnel from the Kulai District Police Headquarters (IPD) were patrolling Jalan Kenari and stopped a black Myvi after spotting the vehicle behaving suspiciously.
A man and a woman were inside the vehicle when officers approached to conduct an inspection.
However, the pair allegedly became aggressive and attempted to flee by ramming the URB motorcycle before crashing into a Mazda CX-5.
Kulai district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the suspects also allegedly tried to ram the officers, prompting police to fire one shot at the vehicle’s tyre to defend themselves and bring the car to a stop.
“The suspects, however, managed to escape following the incident.
“As a result, one URB officer suffered minor injuries to his leg after becoming trapped when the police motorcycle was struck by the suspects,” he said in a statement today.
Forensic personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters who examined the scene later found bullet and cartridge case fragments.
Tan said a manhunt by the Kulai IPD Criminal Investigation Division led to the arrest of the two suspects, a 23-year-old man and woman who are believed to be a couple, within 24 hours.
The pair were arrested separately in Bandar Putra, Kulai and Kluang between 11.30am and 8.30pm on Saturday.
Police also seized a remote control device and the black Perodua Myvi believed to have been used during the incident.
“Initial urine screening tests on both suspects were negative, while checks found that neither had a previous criminal record.
“The motive for the incident is still under investigation,” Tan said.
The case is being investigated under Sections 307, 332 and 186 of the Penal Code.
Both suspects are expected to be brought before the Johor Bahru Magistrates’ Court on Sunday for a remand application.
