Dozens of Pakatan Harapan (PH) flags put up around the Kota Laksamana state constituency in Melaka were allegedly vandalised by three men in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident reportedly took place at about 2am along the main road in Kampung Lapan.
PH candidate for Kota Laksamana, Low Chee Leong, said he was disappointed by the incident, which he believed involved three men based on witness accounts and CCTV footage from the area.
He said the footage showed the three men, dressed in dark clothing, approaching the flags before pulling them down and throwing them onto the ground.
“Some witnesses who saw what happened tried to confront and chase them, but the three men fled towards a nearby apartment,” he told Sinar Harian on Thursday.
A police report was subsequently lodged at the Tengkera Police Station in Melaka Tengah at 8.39am on Wednesday.
Chee Leong said such behaviour was disappointing, stressing that election campaigning should be conducted in a healthy and mature manner.
He said the PH Kota Laksamana campaign team had put up the flags at the location at around 1am on Tuesday.
He also pointed out that Melaka caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh had previously urged all political parties to campaign fairly and responsibly.
“I hope there will be no more acts of sabotage like this. Whatever happens, my team and I will not lose heart. Instead, we will continue working hard to ensure that we retain victory here,” he said.
