Man Killed, Friend Stabbed After Refusing To Give Box Of Matches To Stranger

Date:

A 30-year-old man was killed and his friend injured after they were allegedly attacked by a group of people in northwest Delhi, India, following a dispute over a box of matches.

Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday outside a liquor shop in the Keshav Puram area when the victims, Bhawani and Asha Ram, were approached by three individuals asking for matches to light a cigarette.

The two men told them they did not have any matches, triggering a verbal argument that later turned violent.

The suspects allegedly attacked both men with punches and knives.

Bhawani suffered a deep wound to the left side of his back and was rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Asha Ram, 32, sustained a stab wound to the lower left side of his chest and remains hospitalised. His condition has prevented him from giving a statement to police.

Police later used technical information and local intelligence to identify those believed to be involved in the attack.

The main suspect, 19-year-old Naresh Bahadur, also known as Nepali, was arrested along with 19-year-old Tarun and another suspect who is a minor.

Police believe Naresh stabbed both victims, while Tarun and the juvenile suspect allegedly assaulted them with their fists.

The weapon believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered.

A case has been registered at Keshav Puram Police Station under provisions relating to murder and attempted murder, while investigations are continuing.
