PAS decided to end its political cooperation with Bersatu, with the move formally bringing an end to cooperation between the two parties, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
Muhyiddin stressed that the decision came entirely from PAS and was not initiated by Bersatu.
“PAS made the decision not to continue cooperating. This was not Bersatu’s choice (to end the cooperation),” he told reporters at Bersatu’s 10th anniversary celebration.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang announced on June 8 that the party had decided to terminate its political cooperation with Bersatu following a special meeting of its Central Working Committee.
The decision followed an assessment of the current relationship between the two parties, as well as the endorsement of an earlier decision by the PAS Syura Council on June 2 concerning policy, religious and public-interest considerations surrounding political cooperation based on the principle of Muslim unity.
Despite the split, Muhyiddin previously said Bersatu would remain in Perikatan Nasional as one of the coalition’s founding parties and continue strengthening the coalition.
