An Indonesian teenager has been charged at the Magistrate’s Court here with two counts of trafficking suspected heroin and methamphetamine weighing more than 25kg in total.
Nanda Afrizal, 19, a construction worker, nodded after the charges were read before Magistrate Norasidah A Rahman on Friday.
For the first charge, Nanda is accused of trafficking approximately 17,842g of suspected heroin in a room at a house in Taman Lian Seng at about 3pm on September 13.
The charge was framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act.
He faces a second trafficking charge involving approximately 8,109g of suspected methamphetamine at the same location and time.
The second charge was also brought under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted of the trafficking charges, he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment and, if not sentenced to death, at least 12 strokes of whipping.
In a separate charge, Nanda was accused of possessing approximately 5.25g of suspected methamphetamine in the living room of the same house at the same time and date.
The possession charge was brought under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39A(1), which carries a jail term of between two and five years and between three and nine strokes of whipping upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azman appeared for the prosecution, while Nanda was not represented by a lawyer.
No bail was offered. The court fixed November 25 for the submission of the chemistry report and mention of the cases.
Nanda also faced an immigration charge under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for allegedly remaining in Malaysia after the expiry of his social visit pass on October 8 without reasonable cause.
The offence is punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act by a fine of at least RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Nanda pleaded guilty to the immigration offence, for which the magistrate sentenced him to eight months in prison from the date of his arrest.
