Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek has confirmed that a secondary school in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, has closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras following the death of a Form Four student at the school.
However, she said the CCTV cameras were not installed at the location where the student’s body was found in the school hall on Saturday afternoon.
“The school has CCTV, but it was not installed at the location where the incident took place. So, we are improving this and taking immediate action,” she said during a press conference at the Parliament Media Centre today.
Fadhlina also urged schools with existing CCTV systems to report any cameras that are damaged or not functioning properly so that the Education Ministry can take the necessary steps to ensure they remain operational.
“This is why I said that any school that already has CCTV, but where the CCTV is not functioning or is damaged, should inform us so that we can improve it together and take action to ensure the CCTV functions properly to record incidents occurring in schools,” she said.
The statement comes amid an ongoing police investigation into the death of the 16-year-old Form Four student, who was found dead inside the school hall in Yong Peng on Saturday.
