A 39-year-old self-employed woman lost her BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) petrol subsidy, Touch ‘n Go reward points and stored value after allegedly falling victim to a phone scam involving someone posing as a Touch ‘n Go representative.
Consumers Association of Kedah (CAKE) president Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff said the woman approached the association’s office on Sunday to report the incident.
He said the woman was contacted by an individual who offered her a new Touch ‘n Go card, allegedly promising benefits including reward points, shopping vouchers and discounts of up to 80%, as well as the ability to use the card overseas.
After agreeing to receive the new card, the woman was instructed to open her Touch ‘n Go eWallet application and follow a series of steps supposedly required to apply for it.
However, she later discovered that the individual had gained access to her account and used her Touch ‘n Go application without her knowledge.
The woman is estimated to have lost around RM150. Yusrizal said the scammers appeared to be targeting BUDI95 subsidies because the benefit is linked to the Touch ‘n Go application.
CAKE advised the victim to lodge reports with the police and Touch ‘n Go, while noting that several other individuals had also come forward claiming to have fallen victim to similar scams.
Yusrizal urged the public to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited offers over the phone, warning that scammers are increasingly using different tactics to gain access to victims’ accounts.
