An eight-day-old baby girl died tragically after her head was smashed when she was thrown to the floor twice in Desa Gambah, Barabai District, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency (HST), South Kalimantan, Indonesia, on Monday.
Police identified the alleged perpetrator as HA, also known as BT, 38, from Batu Benawa District. The baby, named ST, was reportedly at her grandfather’s home when the incident happened.
According to a joint statement from police spokesperson AKP Andi Patinasarani and public relations officer Ipda Taufik, the attack occurred when HA visited the home of Supian Suri, 63, the baby’s grandfather.
“At the time, only the baby’s grandmother, Paridah, 60, and the infant, who was sleeping, were present. HA asked about Supian’s whereabouts and about the baby.
“The suspect became enraged after learning that ST was the child of ZR, 23. Without thinking, he picked up the baby and slammed her onto the floor twice, leaving her covered in blood,” the statement said.
Paridah’s screams alerted neighbors, who rushed to the house and apprehended HA on the spot.
The suspect is now in police custody and, if convicted, faces up to 15 years in prison.
“We take this case seriously, and the perpetrator will face appropriate punishment,” authorities added.
