A 51-year-old lorry driver tested positive for drugs after his vehicle crashed into 11 other vehicles at a traffic light junction along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari in Alam Budiman on Friday afternoon.
Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Sarudin Samah said a urine screening test found the driver positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The driver has been detained to assist investigations under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He is expected to be remanded at the Shah Alam Court today.
Sarudin said preliminary investigations found that the driver claimed his brakes had failed before he lost control of the lorry while travelling downhill from Puncak Perdana towards Puncak Alam at about 4.20pm.
The lorry subsequently veered into the opposite lane and crashed into 11 vehicles waiting at the traffic lights at the three-way junction in Alam Budiman.
A 58-year-old man driving a Subaru XV sports utility vehicle (SUV) sustained serious head injuries and is receiving treatment in the red zone at UiTM Hospital in Puncak Alam.
His 53-year-old wife and their 17-year-old grandson, who were also in the vehicle, are receiving treatment at the same hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Another victim, a 29-year-old man driving a Perodua Myvi, sustained bodily injuries and is also reported to be stable.
Members of the public with information about the incident are urged to contact Shah Alam district police traffic investigation officer Inspector Abdul Nasser Peping at 012-286 3875 to assist with investigations.
On Friday, footage of the incident went viral on social media, showing a lorry allegedly travelling against the flow of traffic before crashing into several vehicles at the junction.
