A man in his 30s was injured after being shot by police and arrested following an alleged dangerous driving spree that saw several vehicles rammed into in Petaling Jaya on Friday evening.
The incident occurred at around 6.42pm along Persiaran Mahogani towards Sungai Buloh, when the suspect, who was driving a Proton Wira, was allegedly pursued by a police patrol car.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said the suspect was arrested at the scene after allegedly acting aggressively and driving dangerously.
“The suspect sustained injuries from shots fired by the police,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Shamsudin added that a police patrol officer involved in the incident was also injured and had received hospital treatment.
Videos circulating on social media reportedly showed a vehicle being pursued by a police patrol car before crashing into several other vehicles. The driver was then seen fleeing on foot before being chased by several police officers.
A search of the suspect reportedly uncovered drugs and a toy weapon resembling a pistol. However, a urine screening test had not yet been conducted as the suspect was still receiving medical treatment.
Police are investigating why the man allegedly fled from officers attempting to conduct a check. His employment status has also yet to be established.
Checks revealed that the suspect has 10 previous records, comprising six drug-related cases and four criminal cases.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties, Section 279 for reckless or dangerous driving, and Section 307 for attempted murder.
Investigations are also being conducted under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, as well as Sections 39B and 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
An application for the suspect’s remand was scheduled for October 10 at University Malaya Medical Centre.
Shamsudin urged the public not to spread inaccurate information or speculate about the incident. Anyone with relevant information has been asked to contact the nearest police station or the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters operations room at 03-7966 2222 to assist with investigations.
