A 37-year-old man is in critical condition after a homemade fish bomb exploded in the kitchen of a house in Kampung Keliangau, Manggatal, Sabah.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrudin Mat Husain said the incident occurred at about 2.15pm on Friday, leaving the victim with serious injuries to both hands and his abdomen.
“The victim was taken to Menggatal Health Clinic before being referred to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI). He was reported to be in critical condition and unconscious,” he said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the man had been making a homemade explosive device intended for fishing when the explosion occurred.
Police, together with the Bomb Disposal Unit from the Sabah police contingent headquarters and officers from the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters, inspected the scene.
Several materials suspected of being used to make homemade fish bombs were found and seized for technical examination and further investigation, Shahrudin said.
He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the cause of the explosion, determine the source of the materials used and identify whether anyone else was involved.
The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act.
