Nga Kor Ming Praises UM Student For Speaking Out Against Donations For Najib’s Fine

Date:

Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming has backed a University of Malaya (UM) student who criticised public donations to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pay his RM50 million court fine, describing the stance as a reflection of young Malaysians’ rejection of corruption.

Nga said the student’s remarks deserved support, adding that young people should be encouraged to speak out against corruption.

“I want to praise our students. This is the voice of the people, the voice of students, the voice of our younger generation, and we should support it,” he said.

He also welcomed UM’s decision not to take disciplinary action against the student, who had described donations for Najib’s fine as the “stupidest” thing he had ever seen, referring to donors as people willing to contribute to a “thief”.

Speaking at the 24th Perak DAP Annual Convention, officiated by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Nga warned that glorifying individuals associated with corruption could send the wrong message to younger generations.

He said society should question what children and future leaders would learn if people linked to corruption continued to receive public support.

“Imagine a group of thieves glorifying corruption until it becomes a cancer, with these individuals idolised instead of ridiculed. Do we want to send a message that corruption is a career, not a crime?” he said.

Nga also urged Malaysians not to allow such individuals to return to power, arguing that Pakatan Harapan (PH) must win to protect the country from what he described as groups of thieves.

The controversy followed a viral video showing the UM student criticising members of the public for raising funds to help Najib pay the RM50 million court fine.

In the video, the student voiced concern over corruption and questioned what stance future leaders should take on the issue.
