A 47-year-old nurse was killed after the four-wheel-drive vehicle she was driving crashed through a bridge barrier and plunged about 30 metres into a river along Jalan Ranau-Telupid in Sabah on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Nancy Kitingon, was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident at around 12.58pm at Kilometer 20 of the road.
Ranau district police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said the accident involved an Isuzu D-Max driven by the victim from the direction of Telupid.
Preliminary investigations found that the vehicle is believed to have veered out of control before crashing into the barrier on the left side of the bridge and plunging into the river below.
“The victim’s vehicle is believed to have overturned before villagers came forward to provide assistance,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Nancy was found unconscious and was later pronounced dead at the scene by an assistant medical officer.
Mursalin said investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which concerns causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
