Iran Says Offer To Reopen Strait Of Hormuz Within Seven Days Still On Table

Date:

Iran has reiterated that its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains on the table, urging the United States to accept its conditions to break the deadlock in negotiations.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday that Tehran was reviewing Washington’s response to the proposal, which was submitted in mid-September after an interim ceasefire collapsed.

“Our situation is clear and based on the seven-days proposal presented to the US. They shared comments which we are reviewing, but our proposal is still on the table,” Araqchi told Iranian media while in Baghdad for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

He accused Washington of lacking sincerity, saying the path towards reopening the strategic waterway was clear if the US genuinely wanted an agreement.

Iran’s conditions include lifting the US blockade on its ports, removing sanctions on Iranian oil exports and ending hostilities across all regional fronts.

Araqchi said the strait could reopen within six days if Washington accepted Tehran’s demands, with negotiations resuming the following day.

However, talks have stalled over disagreements surrounding the conditions. Iran’s security chief said last week that the US response was insufficient because it failed to address all seven requirements for reopening the waterway.

A major point of contention is Washington’s insistence that Iran’s nuclear programme be addressed from the outset.

US Vice President JD Vance said earlier this month that Tehran must make a “meaningful” reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity to meet US demands and bring an end to the eight-month conflict.

Iran, meanwhile, maintains that negotiations should initially focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring security in the waterway.

Before the war, the strategic shipping route carried about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, making its disruption a major concern for international energy markets.
