A driver allegedly speeding through traffic in Taiwan crashed into seven cars waiting at a red light, triggering an eight-vehicle pile-up that left three people injured.
The frightening incident occurred at around 10pm on October 18 at the junction of Huanbei Road and Minquan Road in Zhongli, Taoyuan.
According to Taiwanese media, the silver car sped through the inner lane without braking and ploughed into the stationary vehicles. The impact was so powerful that one car was spun around 180 degrees before crashing into another vehicle.
Three people were injured in the collision, suffering injuries including cuts to the head and hands, as well as abrasions across various parts of their bodies. They were taken to hospital for treatment.
The crash left several vehicles badly damaged. The front of the driver’s car was wrecked, while other cars suffered crushed bodywork and deformed doors. One vehicle was reportedly so badly damaged that its tyres were sent flying, with part of its body torn apart.
Witnesses said traffic had stopped at the red light when the speeding car suddenly ploughed into the queue.
The driver, a 37-year-old man, reportedly climbed out of his vehicle and stood on its bonnet after the crash. His behaviour angered the owners of the damaged cars, who were shocked by what they described as his apparent lack of remorse.
Police found no evidence that the driver had been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
His family reportedly said he had been under severe work-related stress and was emotionally unstable, which they believed may have contributed to his loss of control.
The accident occurred near Huanbei Station on the Taoyuan Airport MRT line and the SOGO department store in Zhongli, an area known for its busy traffic.
The collision caused major traffic congestion in the surrounding area. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
