A family’s decade-long dream of parenthood ended in tragedy on Saturday (Sept 27) when a one-year-old boy was killed in a four-vehicle crash at the Bukit Kajang toll plaza on the SILK Highway.
The victim, Amir Husayn, was travelling with his mother, Nurul Husna Khairuddin, 38, his twin brother Amir Hasan and his grandparents when their car was struck by a lorry. The impact threw Amir Husayn from the vehicle, killing him at the scene.
His father, Amirul Ridzuan Abu Bakar, 39, a lecturer who was in Kedah on work duties at the time, received an emergency message from his wife’s phone just before 11am. “I tried calling several times but there was no answer until someone else picked up and told me she had been involved in an accident,” he said on Sunday.
Amirul said his son had shown unusual behaviour that morning. “Normally, he would eat messily, but that morning he ate neatly and eagerly, as though he knew his time had come,” he recalled.
Amirul and Nurul Husna, who married in 2013, welcomed their twin boys on May 20 last year after nearly a decade of waiting. Amir Husayn, born 15 seconds after his brother, was laid to rest at the Sungai Kantan Muslim Cemetery. Amir Hasan remains under hospital observation, while Nurul Husna is still grieving. “I want to give her space,” Amirul said.
He added that he deeply regretted not being with his family at the time of the tragedy. “I am heartbroken seeing my wife’s condition, especially when remembering our child who has passed. I leave everything to the authorities to take appropriate action,” he said.
Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Naazron Abdul Yusof said initial investigations point to brake failure as the cause of the crash. The lorry driver allegedly jumped from his vehicle after claiming the brakes had failed before it slammed into three other vehicles heading toward the toll plaza.
Seven other people were injured in the collision and were taken to Kajang Hospital, Serdang Hospital, and KPJ Kajang for treatment.
