Date:

One person was killed and five others injured, including a 12-year-old girl, after a gunman opened fire in Trappes, a town in the Yvelines department southwest of Paris, on Friday.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the incident as a “crime of violence” during a press conference, adding that an investigation was underway into what he called an extremely serious act, Xinhua reported.

The shooting occurred at around 10.30am local time (8.30am GMT).

According to French daily newspaper Le Figaro, the gunman fired an automatic weapon from inside a car.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed in a post on social media platform X that the suspect had been arrested and taken into police custody.

France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) said it had opened an investigation into “murder linked to acts of terrorism”.
