A Myanmar couple have been arrested to assist investigations after the body of a seven-month-old foetus was found in a rubbish chute at a low-cost flat in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, with police alleging that the woman had used ChatGPT to seek information before terminating the pregnancy.
The 23-year-old man and 31-year-old woman were arrested on Tuesday night and reportedly admitted their involvement in the case, according to Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Kuang Chong Foong. They also told police they were in a romantic relationship.
Police received a report at 10.53am on Tuesday after an Alam Flora cleaner discovered the foetus in a rubbish chute at the Abdullah Hukum flats in Bangsar.
Kuang said police reviewed closed-circuit television footage to identify the suspects before arresting the man near the scene at about 8.30pm. The woman was subsequently arrested in Cheras.
Investigations reportedly found that the woman had used ChatGPT to search for information and purchased prohibited medication online to terminate the seven-month pregnancy.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that the case was being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which concerns the concealment of a birth by secretly disposing of a dead body.
Speaking after an event at the PPR Laksamana flats, Fadil thanked members of the public for providing information that helped police trace the suspects.
He said police were still investigating the case, including verifying whether the two suspects were married.
At the same event, Fadil said the Wangsa Maju police district would formally adopt the PPR Laksamana flats and strengthen cooperation with residents to combat crime and improve community safety.
Accompanied by Wangsa Maju district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anas, Fadil also presented an adoption certificate to Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Ghani.
