A 57-year-old woman drowned while undergoing aquatic therapy at a condominium swimming pool in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, on Saturday evening.
Northeast District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police received information about the incident from a member of the public at 6.10pm.
Preliminary investigations found that the woman had been undergoing aquatic therapy with her foreign husband at around 5.20pm when he briefly left the pool to answer a phone call from a friend.
Her husband was away for about five minutes. When he returned, he found his wife submerged in the water, believed to have fallen off a flotation device.
He then jumped into the pool, brought her to the edge and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
However, medical personnel who arrived at the scene pronounced the woman dead at 5.49pm, Abdul Rozak said in a statement.
The victim’s body was subsequently sent to the Penang Hospital Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Police found no initial indication of criminal involvement and classified the case as a sudden death report (SDR) pending further investigation.
