A Perodua Bezza driver chasing an ambulance carrying his grandmother to the hospital ran a red light at Kulim Hi-Tech, sparking a chain collision involving five vehicles, including a motorcycle with two college students.
Kulim District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Azizan, said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. when the Bezza, tailing a private ambulance, beat the red light and collided with a Nissan Grand Livina driven by a 36-year-old woman who was lawfully crossing the junction.
“The impact caused the Grand Livina to overturn, crashing into a Proton Saga, a Toyota Camry, and a motorcycle carrying two 19-year-old students who were waiting at the opposite lane traffic light. The Bezza also skidded off the road and sustained severe damage,” he said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the Bezza driver claimed he was following his grandmother, who was being transported by the ambulance to a specialist hospital in Butterworth, Penang.
The accident left one of the motorcycle riders with a broken ankle and the pillion rider with leg and hand injuries. The Bezza driver complained of chest pain, while the Grand Livina driver suffered injuries to her head and hand. Fortunately, the Proton Saga and Toyota Camry drivers escaped unharmed.
One of the victims, a healthcare worker from Kulim Hospital who was driving the Proton Saga, said his car sustained front-end damage.
Police have classified the case under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving.
