LED display screens at several locations across Kluang were hacked on Thursday, resulting in pornographic images and videos being broadcast to the public.
The Kluang Municipal Council (MPK) confirmed the incident in a statement, saying it would lodge a police report to facilitate a full investigation.
The council said it was working with the system vendor to identify the cause of the breach, carry out recovery measures and strengthen security.
“MPK apologises for any inconvenience and distress caused to the Kluang community following this incident,” it said.
MPK described the incident as serious and strongly condemned the act, adding that it would pursue legal action against anyone attempting to tarnish its reputation and image.
Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor also confirmed receiving a report on the incident.
He said MPK had taken immediate action by shutting down all LED screens after discovering that its display system had been hacked.
The incident went viral on social media and WhatsApp groups, with several screens reportedly showing explicit content in public areas.
Among the locations affected were Dataran Tasik Kluang, Taman Intan in Kluang town and areas along the road towards Kahang.
The displays sparked concern among residents, with many urging the council to investigate and identify those responsible.
“This needs to be thoroughly investigated and action taken against those involved. It is truly embarrassing, given the Kluang Bahagia status,” netizen Azman Halil said.
