A former Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station chief has been charged with accepting RM2,000 in alleged gratification in May last year.
Wan Muhammad Faiz Wan Asri, 31, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial when the charge was read before Sessions Court judge Sazlina Safie on Friday.
According to the charge, he allegedly received RM2,000 in cash without consideration from a man who had dealings related to his official duties.
The alleged offence took place at the grounds of Dewan Serbaguna Puncak Arabella in Cameron Highlands at about 9.45pm on May 28, 2025.
He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Rais Adha Ramli, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ahmad Nur Faid Afiq Aziz.
Following his not-guilty plea, the prosecution proposed bail of RM12,000 with one surety. It also requested that he report to the nearest MACC office monthly and refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses.
However, his lawyer sought a reduction, arguing that the proposed amount was beyond his client’s financial means, given his monthly income of about RM3,000.
The lawyer added that Wan Muhammad Faiz was responsible for supporting his wife, child and both parents, and would have to use his savings to pay the bail.
After considering the appeal, Sazlina reduced bail to RM5,000 with one surety while maintaining the additional conditions.
The court fixed December 11 for mention.
