Najib Still Has Not Paid RM50 Million Fine Required For House Arrest, AGC Confirms

Date:

Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has yet to settle the RM50 million fine imposed on him, according to the latest information received by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said there was no specific deadline for Najib to make the payment.

“So far, the information we have received indicates that Datuk Seri Najib has yet to fulfil the requirement,” he told reporters after attending the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ MADANI Adopted School launch at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Hor here on Sunday.

Asked whether Najib would still have to serve his prison sentence if the fine remained unpaid, Mohd Dusuki confirmed that this was the case.

On September 18, it was reported that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, had granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.

The arrangement is subject to Najib paying the RM50 million fine.

The Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division said the order was decided during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.

In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.

The sentence was upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022.

However, during its 61st meeting on January 29, 2024, the Pardons Board decided to reduce Najib’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Separately, on December 26 last year, the High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years in prison and fined him RM11.4 billion after finding him guilty of four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.

He filed an appeal against the decision on December 29, 2025.

In a civil case, the High Court on March 31 ordered Najib to repay US$1.3 billion to SRC International after finding that he had breached his fiduciary duties, abused his position and misappropriated company funds for personal gain. However, enforcement of the payment was stayed pending the outcome of his appeal.

Najib is also facing two other lawsuits filed by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd in 2021, as well as a US$5.64 billion civil suit brought by 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries. All remain before the courts.
