A former police corporal has been charged with using a fake court summons to avoid reporting for duty and undergoing a preliminary urine screening test two years ago.
Abd Ghani Ali, 39, pleaded not guilty to both charges when they were read out before Magistrate Kartini Kasran on Friday.
He was dismissed from the police force last year after testing positive for drugs in a urine test.
According to the charges, Abd Ghani allegedly falsified court records by changing hearing dates to September 21, 24 and 26, 2023, making it appear that he was required to testify at the Sungai Petani Sessions Court in Kedah.
The alleged offences took place at the Tangkak Police Station on September 23, 2023.
He was charged under Section 466 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine upon conviction.
According to the case facts, Abd Ghani was supposed to report for duty on the day in question and undergo a preliminary urine screening test.
However, he allegedly claimed that he could not attend because he had to appear in court on the stated dates.
He also reportedly submitted the purported summons to an officer on duty, claiming it had been issued by the court as justification for missing the urine test.
The alleged forgery was uncovered after the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) at the Tangkak district police headquarters checked with the court and found that the summons was fake.
Questioning subsequently revealed that Abd Ghani had allegedly fabricated the document to avoid the urine screening test.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Weng Hong handled the prosecution, while Abd Ghani was unrepresented.
The court granted him bail of RM8,000 with one surety and fixed November 26 for mention at the Muar Sessions Court for document submission and the appointment of a lawyer.
