A Taichung woman surnamed Chiu has been sentenced to 8 years and 8 months in prison for pouring a strong acid solution on her cohabiting partner, surnamed Hsieh, in 2022, causing severe and permanent injuries. The Supreme Court recently upheld the sentence, rejecting her appeal.
According to court documents, Chiu, upset that Hsieh visited a hotel with female companions, purchased sulfuric acid and attacked him outside their home on March 29, 2022. Hsieh suffered chemical burns covering 29% of his body, including face, eyes, neck, torso, and limbs, resulting in permanent scars, restricted mobility, corneal clouding, and facial disfigurement.
Both lower courts ruled that Chiu’s actions were intentional and extreme, carried out out of personal grievances without remorse, and caused Hsieh major, hard-to-treat injuries. The Supreme Court confirmed the verdict, finalizing her prison term.
