Wall Collapse Killing Six in Funeral Including 25-Year-Old Graduate

Date:

A tragic accident struck a rural funeral gathering in Liujiawan Village, Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, China, when a seemingly stable cement wall suddenly collapsed during a stormy evening, killing six people on the spot. Among the victims was 25-year-old university student Lu, who had just graduated and was preparing for exams. Her mother, still in shock, has refused to bury her daughter, keeping the body at a funeral home and demanding a full investigation into the cause.

The incident occurred on the evening of September 10, when Lu went to her aunt’s house for a wake banquet. Following local custom, relatives host a feast the day before a funeral. Lu, her aunt, and uncle sat near a wall in a neighbor’s yard. Heavy rain accumulated on a blue canopy above the table. Around 6:30 p.m., the weight of the water caused the ten-meter-long, three-meter-high cement wall to collapse, instantly killing six people, including Lu and her 53-year-old aunt. Only her uncle survived with minor injuries. Autopsy reports confirmed that Lu died from multiple organ injuries caused by blunt force trauma to the chest.

Emergency authorities, local government, and civil affairs departments collectively offered compensation of 146,000 RMB (approximately NT$632,000) to each affected family, contingent on immediate cremation. While the other families accepted the offer, Lu’s mother refused, insisting on a transparent investigation into the wall collapse. As of October 28, Lu’s body had remained at the funeral home for 47 days.

The tragedy is seen as a combination of natural and human factors. Heavy rainfall, inadequate canopy drainage, and potential structural defects in the wall contributed to its collapse. Local authorities have confirmed the death toll but have withheld details on the exact cause of the collapse, stating that an official report will provide clarity.

The incident has sparked public concern over safety at rural funeral and wedding banquets. Experts urge organizers to carefully inspect venues, especially temporary structures, and consider weather-related risks. Authorities are called on to release their findings promptly to provide both the family and the public with a clear explanation.
